Pre-Conference Sessions

Wednesday October 4th

All Day Session: Hour of Code
(All day; 9:00am-4:00pm) - $100

Instructors: Amy Stanley and Sarah Justice

Computer science is foundational knowledge for all students in the 21st century. But a lot of schools don't teach it, especially at the elementary level. But now your elementary school can. With the help of Code.org, we will provide 6 hours of training for elementary school teachers and media coordinators interested in teaching computer science. Over 10,000 teachers have participated in a workshop and the majority say it's the best PD they've ever attended. What's in the workshop?

In-person instruction including an intro to computer science, pedagogy, overview of the online curriculum, teacher dashboard, and strategies for teaching "unplugged" classroom activities.

All attending teachers will also receive (at no cost):
  • Printed curriculum guide
  • classroom supplies for the unplugged lessons
  • certificate of completion (which could count for PD credit
  • and fun Code.org swag.

PM Session: Fake News
(1:00pm-4:00pm) - $50.00

Instructor: April Dawkins

Fake News has been the catchphrase of the day, but it is also an opportunity for school librarians to highlight the information literacy skills that they can teach students. This pre-conference session will focus on leveraging the timeliness of this topic by filling your toolbag with lessons, resources, and tools for collaboration with teachers about media literacy. Explore multiple resources to convince teachers of your unique talents in embedding information literacy skills into the curriculum that they already teach. Grades 6-12

PM Session: Future Ready Librarians
(1:00pm-4:00pm) - $50.00
